Breville BOV800XL Smart Oven 1800-Watt Convection Toaster with Element IQ – Overview

If you are serious about buying a large, advanced, luxury toaster oven, take a look at the Breville BOV800XL Smart Oven 1800-Watt Convection Toaster with Element IQ.

What is Element IQ? In order to cook different foods properly, you need to apply heat differently for each type. For example, to cook a steak you need to sear the outside quickly. But, baked goods require evenly applied heat over a period of time.

The Breville Smart Oven adjusts heat depending on the type of food being cooked. 1800-watts of power is distributed over 5 quartz elements precisely when and where it is needed.

Fast preheat time and convection cooking helps you put the meal on the table quicker.

9 preset functions give you versatility. Control dials and pushbuttons are well marked for easy selection of presets or for manual adjustments. And the attractive blue, back-lit LCD display is easy to read.

If you want to personalize any or all of the presets, it’s easy. The Breville Smart Oven remembers your adjustments for the next use.

Breville BOV800XL Smart Oven 1800-Watt Convection Toaster with Element IQ – Features

Capacity/Size

The Breville BOV800XL Smart Oven 1800-Watt Convection Toaster with Element IQ is a large 0.8 cu. ft. toaster ovens. One of the largest capacities in the market. Yet it’s footprint is not the largest in outside dimensions.

If you are limited in counter space, this is probably not the best idea for your kitchen as you will not want to move it around a lot. However, the large interior will cook a roast, a whole chicken (up to 6 pounds) or a 13-inch pizza.

Power and Control

The 1800-watts of the Breville Smart Oven is the most power that you can have in an appliance that you plug into a wall outlet. That’s because this is the maximum that your standard plug will supply.  Do not use anything else on the same circuit or you will trip your circuit breaker or blow a fuse.

You will love the control panel. I do. It has the following dials and buttons:

  • FUNCTION Dial – selects the 9 preset functions:
    • Toast
    • Bagel
    • Bake
    • Roast
    • Broil
    • Pizza
    • Cookies
    • Reheat
    • Warm
  • START/CANCEL Pushbutton
  • Convection On/Off Button
  • Frozen Food Button
  • Fahrenheit/Celsius Button
  • TEMP/Darkness Dial – adjusts the temperature setpoint for manual cooking control or the darkness endpoint for the Toast or Bagel functions
  • TIME/Pizza Size/Slices – adjust the time setpoint for manual cooking control or the size for the Pizza function or number of slices for the Pizza and Toast functions

The Breville BOV800XL Smart Oven 1800-Watt Convection Toaster with Element IQ also remembers your customized time and temperature adjustments of the preset functions. Next time you use the customized preset it will automatically adjust so you get the same perfect results every time.

Brand

The Breville group is an Australian manufacturer of small kitchen appliances with offices in the U.S., Canada, Hong Kong, and New Zealand.

In Britain and Europe it is owned by Newell Brands.

Some of the products Breville makes are contact grills, kettles, espresso machines, toasters, microwave ovens, pressure cookers, coffeemakers, juicers, blenders, food processors, and others.

The company is trusted and well-respected for its high-quality products and excellent product support.

Appearance

This is one very attractive small kitchen appliance. The stainless steel exterior presents clean, simple lines. And the well laid out control panel with its blue backlit LCD display blend well into any modern kitchen.

Functionality and Performance

Each preset of the Breville BOV800XL Smart Oven 1800-Watt Convection Toaster with Element IQ is programmed and tested to ensure the best results consistently.

For example, in Broil the 3 top elements, totaling 1500 watts, provide high temperature top heat that melts and browns food.

In Toast, 1800 watts of searing power seal and crisp the outside of the food from top and bottom.  Bake cooks right through with 1500 watts of convection heat surrounding the food.

Rack height plays an important role in how food is cooked. Breville has printed recommendations on the door window so you can see at a glance which height should be use for each preset function.

Top rack height should be used for BROIL. Middle rack height is best for TOAST, BAGEL, PIZZA, and COOKIE functions. And the bottom rack height is used for BAKE, ROAST, REHEAT, and WARM.

When a rack is in the middle position, the rack is automatically ejected when the door is opened for your safety in removing toasted items.

The top of the oven is complete with a ribbed plate warmer. It gets very hot during and after operating. Be careful not to touch it or put anything, other than a ceramic plate, on it that might melt or cause a fire. The sides stay relatively cool for your safety.

The Breville Smart Oven is sturdily built with reinforced stainless steel.  It is easy to clean with a non-stick interior. And its crumb tray is made for easy pull-out without having to open the door.

It is covered by a 1-year limited warranty.

  1. Hi Ed, I really like the versatility it looks that this convection toaster has for cooking many different things. I see it is good for boneless chops. Could you tell me if this oven would be good for steak, and if so about what would be the thickness it would be optimal for?

    1. Hi Robin,

Thanks for stopping by and leaving your comment and great question. Yes, you can cook steak in the Breville BOV800XL Smart Oven. Thickness doesn’t matter. A thin steak will, of course, cook faster than a thick one. You may have to experiment a little until you get your preferred doneness exactly right for you. However, once you have perfected the timing, you will be able to repeat the results every time.

Hope that I have helped you find the right small kitchen appliance for you.

      Ed
