ChefSteps Joule Sous Vide

The ChefSteps Joule Sous Vide has been called the Apple of Sous Vide due to its similarities to the iconic Apple devices. It features a sleek, elegant white finish. The on/off button and plug mimic the typical Apple design. And the resemblance continues right to the high-tech control by an app. That’s right, you control the ChefSteps Joule Sous Vide with your tablet, cell phone or even with your Amazon Alexa.

It is a comparatively small device, you can easily store it in a cupboard drawer. However, it is a rugged device built for use on a daily basis. There is no display on the ChefSteps Joule Sous Vide itself and this cuts the weight in half compared to its competition.

The single button on the Joule turns it on and off. But, that’s all it needs to do. The intelligent software gets smarter with each update. The button thus acquires new capabilities, such as remembering the last used temperature. Your favorite temperature is just a double-click away.

The ChefSteps Joule Sous Vide has Bluetooth LE and WiFi built-in. You can start and control your sous vide from the bus, your work, or anywhere you want. All you need to get cooking is your cell phone, a pot, a zip-lock bag, and water.

The magnetic base and versatile clip make it easy to attach to almost any container, pots, pans, coolers, or even your kitchen sink. And its easy to clean. Just unscrew the foot, rinse and wipe clean with a soft sponge. The unit is completely sealed, nothing can get inside.

  1. Hi Esteadman,

I enjoyed the very informative review of the Joule device. Thank you.

I managed to purchase this well made machine recently and brought it home to Malaysia aware that a 249v is not available. I am fully aware of the need to operate the machine on 120v AC; being supplied with 240v AC in this country requires me to operate the machine with a step down power conditioned transformer.

While I am aware that use of step down adaptor is not covered by the manufacturer warranty, I am hesitant to go ahead with this approach at this time since there is a risk that the electronics may be impaired by this work-around.

Would you be able to provide some guidance on this? How critical is the stability of the AC power in this application?

    Thank you,

    1. Hi SK,

Thanks for the comment and question. Unfortunately, the Chefsteps Joule Sous Vide is not covered by warranty when used outside of North America in any case. If you are going to return to North America in the future the safest thing to do would be to bring it back and return it or sell it to someone else. As Malaysia seems to be home for you, then you probably bought it for use there. I am not familiar with the stability of the power supply in Malaysia so using it there may pose a risk even with the power conditioning if the power supply is very poor. If the power supply is reasonably stable, no severe fluctuations and no major power surges, then you should be OK to use the Joule with a power conditioned transformer with minimal risk. However, the final call has to be up to you. Good luck.
